Hechos de índole futbolística se produjeron en la fecha patria. Algunos de ellos, en orden cronológico:

Lomas de Zamora, campo del Lomas AC. Torneo de Primera División. St. Andrew´s AC 0 – Rosario AC 2 (Joseph A. Beaumont -2-). Primer partido oficial de la historia jugado en la fecha recordada.
1898
Lomas de Zamora. Torneo de Primera División. Lomas AC 2 (Walter Stirling, Thomas Bridge -e/c-) – Lanús AC 1 (G. Tannahill). Último título para el ganador. Con 5 éxitos era, hasta allí, récord argentino.
1905
Buenos Aires. Fundación del Club Atlético Platense. El 5 mayo de 1910 iniciaría su actuación venciendo 1 a 0 a Olivos por la Copa Bullrich. El “Calamar” está cumpliendo 120 años de vida y 115 de actuación federada.
1910
Buenos Aires. Inauguración del actual estadio de Defensores de Belgrano (Avenida del Libertador y Comodoro Rivadavia). El club databa del 25 de mayo de 1906. Doble aniversario para “Defe”.
Ucacha, Córdoba. Origen del Club Recreativo Sportivo. Desde 1917 se denomina Club Jorge Newbery, Mutual, Social y Deportiva. Milita en la Liga Regional Adrián Béccar Varela (Pascanas). Trayectoria previa en ligas de La Carlota, Etruria, Chazón y Alejandro Roca.
Sunchales, Santa Fe. Fundación del Club Deportivo Libertad. En 1912 debutó en Rafaela. De 1935 data su primer logro en la Liga Rafaelina. Es aurinegro, listado vertical. Campeón nacional de básquetbol en 2007/08.
1915
Fundación de:
- Club Atlético Talleres, Quilino, Córdoba; Liga Ischilín de Fútbol (Deán Funes).
- Club Atlético Río Tercero, Río Tercero, Córdoba; Liga Riotercerense de Fútbol.
- Club Sportivo Barracas, Colón, Buenos Aires; Liga Deportiva de Colón.
- Club Ítalo Argentino, Social y Deportivo, Wheelwright, Santa Fe; Liga Deportiva de Colón.
1916
Ingeniero White, Bahía Blanca. Origen del Club Atlético Huracán. Posee 4 títulos en la Liga del Sur (1967, 1970, Clausura 2015 y Apertura 2023) Primer equipo de la Liga en jugar el Torneo Nacional (1968). Su actuación fue de 2 partidos ganados, 2 empatados y 11 perdidos. Gran
triunfo sobre Estudiantes de La Plata por 1 a 0. Dirime el clásico whitense con el Club Atlético Puerto Comercial.
1920
Buenos Aires. Inauguración del campo de Sportivo Barracas. Final de la Copa Competencia de 1919. Boca Juniors 2 (P. Miranda, P. Bozzo) – Nacional de Montevideo 0. Entre 1920 y 1926, nuestra selección jugó 19 veces en el extinto escenario de Iriarte y Luzuriaga. Allí se logró el primer éxito en Copa América (1921).
1923
Campo de Sportivo Barracas. Copa Chevallier Boutell. Argentina 1 (Carlos Izaguirre) – Paraguay 0. Primer partido de la Selección Nacional en la fecha recordada.
1925
Pehuajó, Buenos Aires. Amistoso internacional. K.D.T. local – Centro Atlético Lito de Montevideo 1. Su capitán, Fermín Uriarte, fue 14 veces internacional. El extinto club oriental fue el primero del exterior en jugar en Pehuajó.
Pueblo Liebig, Colón, Entre Ríos. Origen del Club Atlético Unidos. Milita en la Liga Departamental de su cabecera. Ésta se originó el 25 de mayo de 1924.
1938
Buenos Aires. Inauguración del Estadio Monumental. El 26 se jugó el primer partido. River Plate 3 (C. D. Peucelle, B. Ferreyra, J. M. Moreno) – Club Atlético Peñarol 1 (J. P. Young). Allí, Argentina logró los Sudamericanos de 1945, 1959 y el mundial de 1978.
1939
El Charco, Santiago del Estero. Nacimiento del nº 9 Walter Antonio Jiménez. Iniciado en el Club Mitre de su provincia militó, entre otros, en Independiente y Colo Colo; en estos últimos fue campeón en 1960 y 1963, respectivamente. En la selección argentina jugó 9 veces (1960). Ese mismo año fue campeón del Panamericano en San José de Costa Rica. Falleció en 2023.
1940
Bueno Aires. Inauguración de la “Bombonera”. Amistoso. Boca Juniors 2 (Ricardo Alarcón, Aníbal Tenorio) – San Lorenzo 0. Se jugaron sólo 70 minutos, por no haber Iluminación artificial. Alarcón, autor del primer gol, había militado en el perdedor (1933-39).
1947
Oeiras, Lisboa. Amistoso. Portugal 0 – Inglaterra 10 (T. Lawton -4-, S. Mortensen -4-, T. Finney, S. Matthews). El “descalabro” lusitano no tuvo relación con el fútbol argentino ni con nuestra Fecha Patria, ¡pero sucedió un 25 de mayo!
1950
Campo de Ferro Carril Oeste. Boca Juniors 1 (J. J. Ferraro) – Danubio FC de Montevideo 3 (R. Betancor, C. Romero, J. Ortiz). Último juego de Ernesto Lazzatti en el elenco oriental. Entre 1934 y 1947 había militado en Boca Juniors. Primer triunfo de Danubio FC en el exterior.
1959
Lobos, Buenos Aires. Campo Municipal. Amistoso. Combinado local 4 – Combinado de Roque Pérez 2. Los clubes de esta localidad militan hoy en Lobos, cuya liga data de 1933. Ambas cabeceras distan 38 km.
1976
Córdoba. Cancha de Belgrano. Torneo Clausura de la Liga Cordobesa. Belgrano 0 – Talleres 4 (Humberto R. Bravo -4-). Los protagonistas del clásico local jugaron por primera vez en 1914.
1991
Londres, Wembley. Copa Sir Stanley Rous. Inglaterra 2 (Gary Lineker, David Platt) – Argentina 2 (Claudio García, Darío Franco). En este trofeo -ganado por el anfitrión- también jugó la URSS. El balance albiceleste en el “Viejo” Wembley fue de 2 empates y 3 derrotas, sin victorias; siempre contra Inglaterra.
2025
Este domingo, Platense y San Lorenzo jugarán una de las semifinales del Apertura 2025. Se enfrentaron oficialmente por primera vez en Primera División, el 4 de abril de 1915. Fue el debut de San Lorenzo en la categoría y su rival venció 5 a 1. Fue en Blandengues (hoy Avenida Libertador) y Manuela Pedraza. Platense jugó allí entre 1908 y 1917.
Muchos partidos, oficiales y amistosos, habrá mañana en todo el país. Se añadirán a los incontables eventos que, durante décadas, han coincidido con la histórica fecha.

Various football-related events have taken place on Argentina’s National Day. Here are some of them, in chronological order:
1894
Lomas de Zamora – at the Lomas Athletic Club ground. Primera División tournament. St. Andrew’s AC 0 – Rosario AC 2 (Joseph A. Beaumont scored both goals). This was the first official match in history played on the celebrated date.
1898
Lomas de Zamora. Primera División tournament. Lomas AC 2 (goals by Walter Stirling and an own goal by Thomas Bridge) – Lanús AC 1 (G. Tannahill). This win gave Lomas its last league title. With five championships, it set an Argentine record up to that point.
1905
Buenos Aires. Founding of Club Atlético Platense. On May 5, 1910, Platense would play its first match, a 1–0 win over Olivos in the Copa Bullrich. The “Calamar” (Squid) club is now 120 years old, with 115 years of affiliated competition.
1910
Buenos Aires. Inauguration of the current stadium of Defensores de Belgrano (at Avenida del Libertador and Comodoro Rivadavia). The club itself dates back to May 25, 1906. A double anniversary for “Defe.”

1915 – Foundation of:

1916
Ingeniero White, Bahía Blanca – Origin of Club Atlético Huracán (Ingeniero White). Huracán has 4 titles in the Liga del Sur (1967, 1970, Clausura 2015, Apertura 2023). It was the first club from that league to play in the Nacional championship (1968). Its record there was 2 wins, 2 draws and 11 losses, including a famous 1–0 upset over Estudiantes de La Plata. Huracán (White) contests the local derby with Club Atlético Puerto Comercial.
1920
Buenos Aires. Opening of Sportivo Barracas’s grounds. Final of the 1919 Copa Competencia: Boca Juniors 2 (P. Miranda, P. Bozzo) – Nacional (Montevideo) 0. Between 1920 and 1926, the Argentina national team played 19 times at the now-defunct stadium at Iriarte and Luzuriaga. It was there that Argentina won its first Copa América in 1921.
1923
Sportivo Barracas grounds. Chevallier Boutell Cup: Argentina 1 (Carlos Izaguirre) – Paraguay 0. This was the national team’s first match ever played on May 25.
1925
Pehuajó, Buenos Aires. Friendly international: K.D.T. (local club) 1 – Centro Atlético Lito (Montevideo) 1. The Uruguayan side’s captain, Fermín Uriarte, was capped 14 times for his country. This now-defunct Uruguayan club was the first foreign team to play in Pehuajó.
Pueblo Liebig, Colón, Entre Ríos. Origin of Club Atlético Unidos. It competes in the Colón Departmental Football League. (That league itself was founded on May 25, 1924.)
1938
Buenos Aires. Inauguration of Estadio Monumental. On May 26, the first match was played: River Plate 3 (Carlos Peucelle, Bernabé Ferreyra, José M. Moreno) – Peñarol 1 (Juan P. Young). At this venue, Argentina would later win the South American Championships of 1945 and 1959, as well as the 1978 World Cup.
1939
El Charco, Santiago del Estero. Birth of striker Walter Antonio Jiménez. He began at Club Mitre (Santiago) and later played for Independiente and Colo-Colo, becoming champion in 1960 and 1963, respectively. He made 9 appearances for Argentina (all in 1960), and that same year he won the Pan-American Championship in San José, Costa Rica. He passed away in 2023.
1940
Buenos Aires. Inauguration of La Bombonera stadium. Friendly: Boca Juniors 2 (Ricardo Alarcón, Aníbal Tenorio) – San Lorenzo 0. Only 70 minutes were played due to lack of floodlights. Alarcón, who scored the first goal in the new stadium, had previously played for the defeated side (San Lorenzo, 1933–39).
1947
Oeiras, Lisbon. Friendly: Portugal 0 – England 10 (Tommy Lawton 4, Stan Mortensen 4, Tom Finney, Stanley Matthews). This Portuguese debacle had nothing to do with Argentine football or our national holiday – but it did happen on a May 25!
1950
Ferro Carril Oeste ground, Buenos Aires. Friendly: Boca Juniors 1 (Juan J. Ferraro) – Danubio FC (Montevideo) 3 (R. Betancor, C. Romero, J. Ortiz). This was Ernesto Lazzatti’s final match in a Boca jersey. (From 1934 to 1947 he had starred for Boca.) It was also Danubio FC’s first victory abroad.
1959
Lobos, Buenos Aires. Municipal field. Friendly: Local Select 4 – Roque Pérez Select 2. (Today the clubs from Roque Pérez play in the Lobos League, founded in 1933. The towns of Lobos and Roque Pérez are 38 km apart.)
1976
Córdoba. Belgrano’s stadium. Final of the Liga Cordobesa Clausura. Belgrano 0 – Talleres 4 (Humberto Reynoso Bravo scored all four goals). The protagonists of Córdoba’s biggest rivalry had first met in 1914.
1991
London (Wembley Stadium). Sir Stanley Rous Cup. England 2 (Gary Lineker, David Platt) – Argentina 2 (Claudio García, Darío Franco). In this mini-tournament (won by the hosts), the Soviet Union also participated. Argentina’s record at “old” Wembley was 0 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats – all five matches against England.
2025
This Sunday, Platense and San Lorenzo will contest one of the semifinals of the Apertura 2025. They met officially for the first time in Primera División on April 4, 1915. It was San Lorenzo’s debut in the top flight, and their opponent triumphed 5-1. That match was played at Platense’s ground in Buenos Aires (at Blandengues and Manuela Pedraza, now Del Libertador Ave.), where Platense played from 1908 to 1917.
Many matches, both official and friendly, will take place tomorrow across the country. They will be added to the countless events which, over the decades, have coincided with this historic date.
